As the years went by, people started abusing drugs for their powers and misusing them, resulting in dangerous situations and sometimes death. Purple drank is a drug that was popularized in the 90s hip hop culture. It’s a combination of a prescription cough syrup which contains codeine and promethazine, mixed with soft drinks such as Sprite or Mountain Dew. Sometimes a Jolly Rancher is thrown in for extra sweetness and color.
The effect of this combination is known as swooning euphoria, which is a sedative effect that makes the person sipping it woozy.

Purple Drank has caused many notable deaths of users. DJ Screw, who popularized the drink, died of a codeine-promethazine-alcohol overdose in 2000. At least other three hip hop rappers or producers have died because of this concoction.
